About Professional Practice

Professional practice in policing is the ability to behave honestly
and in a manner that maintains the values and good reputation
of the police, a behaviour that I uphold daily. My conceptual understanding of Professional practice is my ability to carry out my job known as the profession in a professional manner by following the steps on how I should conduct myself as a police officer. My understanding of professional practice as a police officer is to act with diligence and care whilst on duty and hopefully in the near future I will continue to act professionally.

About Ethical Practice

Ethical Practice is a fundamental aspect in the line of work as a police officer. These practices include knowledge on the policies in place by the police on my expectations on the job. I believe to act ethically it is to show compassion, respect and empathy. The importance of ethical practice as a police officer is critical as upholds the integrity of the profession. To act ethically as a police officer is to understand at times that I will be dealing with vulnerable people which will require me to approach situations differently, however, while still upholding the rules of the law.

About Interprofessionalism

The concept of Interprofessionalism is a vital aspect within emergency services as they all have the same goal to keep the community safe. My understanding of Interprofessionalism is that people placed into an interprofessional environment are able to apply their knowledge and skill to support or expand the knowledge of their team. Interprofessionalism in policing has an effective outcome as it allows different agencies within the police or emergency services to reduce or resolve issues related to crime by communicating with one another or working together to deliver messages to the public to reduce crime.

(Development studies) graduate skillset and knowledge

1.Generic

Through my experiences in work and degree in policing I have developed a wide range of skills that have been applicable through all the jobs I have had and current policing degree. I have developed and enhanced my communication skills both verbally and written, improving how I work and navigate through my degree. I have also developed my skills in thinking critically, being more reasonable and researching effectively. These skills are useful over a wide range of contexts especially for when I join the police as it will require me to research, think critically and be reasonable. Communication is crucial as a police officer and I think I have the ability to communicate well.

2.Specialised skills

Throughout my work and ongoing policing degree, I have learnt about and experienced engaging with people from culturally diverse backgrounds. Through these experiences I have developed an understanding of the importance of different cultural perspectives that exist. With this knowledge and experiences I am able to as a police officer down the track know how to deal with people from different cultures, understanding that some might be vulnerable. With my enhanced communication, critical thinking and reasoning I will able to deal with situations that involve vulnerable people from culturally diverse backgrounds.

3.Community Funding application development

Through my current degree I have learnt how to  understand when a community is in need for help. I have been taught to analyse communities that need help by identifying whether that community has high rates of crime, homelessness and unemployment based on statistics. When identifying the need in the community it will allow me to identify what proposal development is needed to resolve the issue, whether it be a private program or government initiative. I have the ability to seek the right funding bodies whether it be presenting my proposal to the government, individual investors and successful programs that can potentially lend resources. To gain possible funding bodies, I understand that certain information must be provided to investors so they know what the aim of the program is and how we will execute the program. I am currently working on a program with other individuals that focuses on deterring youth away from coming into contact with the criminal justice system. This program will help do that as it will educate the youth and provide them with the right skills and knowledge that will benefit their future.

4.Applied debating: Developing position papers

My understanding of an applied debate is that it is a debate where you understand both the positive and negative sides of an issue. Once you understand both sides of the issue you are required to pick a side in which you support most and present it. I have been able to develop my position paper thanks to the wide amount of research available in the library and will be able to bring forward the side I support to a judge.
